The origin as well as the meaning of the pictures on the Tarock cards have remained unclear until today. That is why towards the end of the 18th century the card symbols were associated with a mystical, occultic meaning. Since then, the Tarock or Tarot cards have been used for fortune-telling. In Italy and France, however, the normal Tarock is still played. North of the Alps, the Tarot with 78 cards has been known since the middle of the 18th century, however, with French suits (hearts, diamonds, clubs and spades) and different pictures on the 22 cards. At the beginning of the 19th century the game is found in almost any book for playing card rules. Nowadays, the so-called Grand Tarock is played mainly in Austria; there are also versions with shortened card number, such as Cego.
The Tarock which is known in Bavaria (Haferltarock) has nothing in common with the original game except for its name. It is played with 36 cards and German suits by 3 players and it`s a game of pips and tricks.
